What domain name should I go for?
When choosing a domain name for your website you could consider the following:
- Is your domain name representative of your business or organisation?
- Is your domain name catchy or memorable?
- Is your domain name of a suitable length, i.e. not too long?
- Is your domain name ambiguous?
- Is your domain name too similar to other websites which are already popular in the eyes of search engines?
- Does your domain name contain relevant keywords under which people can find you on?
Additional to these questions, you may want to consider choosing the appropriate suffix suitable for your site. Some sites could end in .org.uk for example, for organisations in the UK. Other sites might benefit from a .com suffix as .com's are sometimes considered to be internationally representative (.com being an effective abbreviation of .commercial).
Businesses appealing to international markets would probably choose a .com as an umbrella domain whilst also buying up country specific domains such as .co.uk (UK) .fr (France) .de (Germany) .jp (Japan) and so forth.
Furthermore, businesses regularly choose domains ending in .co.uk and .com for the benefit of website visitors who go direct to their website by guessing their domain; a UK company called "ABC Web Design" might have the website www.abcwebdesign.com or www.abcwebdesign.co.uk or even www.abcwebdesign.net, for example.
